Storm! – Read Lk 8:21-25

Contemplation

We are out on the water, sailing across the big lake. The disciples are good sailors, since they are fishermen. Jesus is asleep in the back of the boat. I can smell the water and hear the shouts and the slap of water against the sides as they steer the boat. Suddenly, the sky goes dark, and I can feel the wind and the rain beginning to sting my face. The boat starts rocking, and I see and hear water sloshing over the side. The disciples are trying to pour the water back out of the boat with buckets, but the storm is loud, and the waters keep coming. Jesus is still asleep. The disciples are sopping wet and really scared now – the waves coming over the boat are higher, and they don’t know what to do! Jesus is still asleep. “Wake up!” “Help!” “We’re going to die!” they shout. Jesus is relaxed. He tells the wind and waves to calm down …. And they do! The wind dies down. The sea is calm again, and the boat has stopped rocking. The disciples are amazed as they throw the last of the water back overboard. “Where’s your faith?,” Jesus asks.

  • Talk to Jesus and the disciples. What do they feel?

  • Have I been in scary situations? Can I trust Jesus there?

  • What are the storms in my life, and where is Jesus for me?
