Greedy People Change – Read Mark 2:13-17

Contemplation

We’re at the beach. There’s a man making money for the Romans – people from far away who control the country with their armies. People don’t like the tax collectors because they collect money for the Romans and get rich from them, even though they are Jewish – like Jesus and his people.

There are the sounds of the seaside, but also the sounds of fear and anger. People paying money… frightened, angry people. There are soldiers with spears and clubs. Jesus looks at Levi in his little box collecting money …. but he isn’t angry. Not only that, he’s actually going to visit him …. and all his friends! A lot of people are very cross, don’t they know how the taxmen make money from our pain? But the taxman’s heart is changed. Look, he’s not going back to the box again – he’s following Jesus. “Who needs a doctor?,” asks Jesus. “Sick people or well people?”

  • Who makes me worried, angry?

  • What do I do about it?

  • Can Jesus change them?

  • Can he change me?
