Read Matt 4:1-11

Contemplation

After the Voice has finished speaking, we are back out in the wilds. The crowds have gone back to their homes and lives, but Jesus is still praying in the silence. For days and days, he waits and listens. No food, no friends. He stays in the empty land, hungry but calm.

Suddenly, there’s a horrible feeling. Now another, nasty, voice comes. “Well, if you are so hungry, you can eat! You are God, aren’t you?”

Jesus pushes it away. “God is even more important than food.”

Suddenly the world seems to swirl in the need to eat. We feel dizzy. We seem to be up high over the ground! “So – if God’s so important, God can bring you down again,” says the nasty voice.

“God’s not something you can control”.

“Well, what’s God for then?,” says the voice again. “I can look after you, give you anything you want! You can have the whole world, if you do what I tell you.”

“God is more than anything or anyone else. I’m not looking for a new God. There isn’t room for others.”

  • Now the evil is gone. God folds us in love.

  • Talk to Jesus. What is he going through?

  • When do I feel alone and what do I feel?

  • What are the things that draw me apart from God?

  • Is God there to help me back?
