The Transfiguration Luke 9:28-50
Imaginative Contemplation
Enter into the scene
Jesus called Peter, James and John to pray with him at the top of the mountain. I joined them. It was a long hard climb, and the sun was hot upon our backs. Gravel on the path made walking difficult, so by the time we got to the top, we just lay on the ground, and, being really tired, went to sleep. We were woken by the sound of voices. There was Jesus (Where did he get those shining clothes from?), and two men were with him, talking about the trials he would soon face. Who were they? Moses, representing the Law, and Elijah, representing the Prophets. It looked as if the men were going to leave, so Peter spoke up and asked Jesus if they could stay longer. Just then, a cloud covered all of us. Shivering with fear, we heard a Voice saying ‘This is my son whom I have chosen – listen to him.’ Then the cloud vanished, and Jesus was standing there, ready to move down the mountain to join the others. We did not tell anyone what had happened, but among ourselves we discussed our experience and what it could mean.
For further reflection
Discuss with Jesus the following points:
· Earlier, Peter had pronounced Jesus as the Messiah. On the mountain, God confirmed Peter’s declaration. When I make a significant decision, do I pray for confirmation?
· Am I careful with what I share with other people?
· Do I refuse to listen to or spread gossip?
Prayer
Lord, lead me to value the time I can give to prayer. Help me to live in the present moment, not trying to hold on when life moves forward. Amen.
