Jesus begins his work in Galilee Luke 4:14-15

Imaginative Contemplation

Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power of the Holy Spirit was with him. The news about him spread throughout all that territory. He taught in the synagogues and was praised by all.

Enter into the scene

I imagine Jesus returning to Galilee.

What is this new enthusiasm, this clearer sense of purpose, which I notice in him?

How is his presence different?

What is he saying to the crowds?

How are they responding?

I come into the synagogue; it is quite hot, and there are many people there. It is hard to find a seat, but I need to sit down so that I can really listen to what Jesus is saying.

He is talking about his Father, and how his Father loves everyone, not just Jesus.

The people are listening. As he continues to talk, a little girl runs up to him and pulls at his clothes. To my surprise, he picks the child up. The little one pulls at his beard. “Oh, that hurts!” laughs Jesus. The child laughs too and pulls again. Now they are both laughing. The sermon is over! Jesus has this wonderful ability to engage with the moment, with the individual in front of him. No standing on ceremony!

The parents, embarrassed, come and take the child away. But this hasn’t upset Jesus. He gives the child another high fie before putting her down so that her parents can take her home. The atmosphere is one of delight and enthusiasm. People are so pleased to have Jesus involved in their lives here and now.

News of Jesus is spreading everywhere. But not all people are accepting him. There are questions: ‘Is this man really a messenger from God? How is it that he goes to the ordinary uneducated people? Surely he should start with the scribes and Pharisees to ensure that he is in line with the Law and the prophets?’ And some people are saying ‘What we need is for God to come in might and power and get rid of the Roman tyrants. Why is he spending so much time with the ordinary people, when the needs of our nation are so extreme?

For further reflection

Discuss with Jesus the following points:

·      How can I relate to Jesus as he is revealed in this text?

·      Talk to Jesus about how I react to our nightly TV news and to my local news in my neighbourhood?

·      How do I think Jesus wants me to respond to our daily situation?

Prayer

Lord, help me to be aware of the needs of the people around me. Lead me to share my time and talents with those who need me. Amen.
