Luke 4:5-11
Imaginative Contemplation
When he had finished speaking, Jesus invited Peter to push the boat into deep water and to begin fishing. Peter objected, since they had caught nothing the previous night. However, he agreed to try again. So many fish were caught that the nets were breaking, and they needed help from their friends. They filled both boats with fish! Simon was shocked, and said to Jesus, ‘Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.’ But Jesus reassured Peter and his companions, saying, ‘Don’t be afraid. From now on it is men that you will be catching.’
They pulled the boats to the shore, left everything and followed Jesus.
For further reflection
Discuss with Jesus the following points:
· What time of day was it? What was the weather like?
· How did I feel after Jesus had finished speaking? What do I want to do now?
· I watch the people going on their way, or talking in small groups, or finding a place to enjoy lunch. How can I deepen the message of Jesus through reflection on his words?
· Jesus asks Peter to row to deeper waters. What are these ‘deep waters?’ What do they contain?
· What are my ‘deep waters’? Do I take time to enter into my deep waters? What have I found there?
· By doing what Jesus asked, the disciples got enough fish to finance their lives for a considerable length of time.
· How do I react when something good happens in my life because I have followed the Lord’s instructions?
· Jesus accepts Peter as he is. God can work through anyone, anyone at all!
· What do I need to leave behind in order to follow Jesus?
Prayer
Lord, may I trust in your care and love for me and for all people. Amen.
