The Transfiguration: Matthew 17:1-13

Imaginative Contemplation

Enter into the scene

Jesus led Peter, James and John up a high mountain.

What was the path like? What was the weather like?

While they were with him, a change came over Jesus. His face became as white as the sun, and his clothes as white as light. Apart from seeing this, what sounds could be heard? Was there an aura about the place?  How would I have felt in such a situation?

Moses and Elijah were talking with Jesus.

How did the disciples know who these two men were?

What were they talking about?

Peter wanted to make three tents there for Jesus, Moses and Elijah.  Why did he want to do this?

A shining cloud came over them and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my own dear Son with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.’ To what message was the Father telling the Apostles to hear?

When the Apostles heard the voice they fell to the ground, terrified. But Jesus said to them, ‘Get up. Don’t be afraid.’

Looking up, they saw no one, but only Jesus.

Why do you think that Jesus offered this event to the three close followers?

For further reflection

Discuss with Jesus the following points:

·       Do I ever want to hold on to the present? How important is it to live in the present moment and move on with the times?

·       Do I try to listen to the Spirit speaking to me?

·       Of whom am I afraid? Can I hear Jesus saying to me, ‘Don’t be afraid’?

·       Do I see Jesus at work in my life?

Prayer

Lord, be with me each day. Guide my thoughts, direct my actions and help me to recognise you in my everyday life. Thank you for this day. Amen.
