Jesus calms a storm: Matthew 8:23-27
Imaginative Contemplation
Enter into the scene
Jesus had invited several people to follow him, but they had declined, knowing that they would have to give up their lifestyle and comforts. I was sad as I heard them leave. They seemed disappointed that Jesus had not offered them an easier path. No, they would not have a permanent place to live. They would have to leave their friends behind. This was too much to ask. I felt sad for Jesus, who certainly did not hide the difficulties his life offered.
As the crowd dispersed, Jesus got into a boat with the disciples and promptly fell into a deep sleep. No wonder, he doesn’t stop! He is so attentive to each person who comes to him.
We hadn’t gone far across the sea of Galilee when one of those horrible blizzards arose. Strong winds stormed down across the Lake, causing angry waves to splash into the boat. We were all frightened, but there was Jesus, still asleep! I shook him. ‘Wake up! We’re about to drown!’
‘Why are you so frightened?’ Jesus answered. ‘Where is your faith?’ He got up, holding onto the side of the boat, which was swaying dangerously from side to side. He gently but firmly ordered the wind to drop and the waves to subside, and there came a great calm. So, this was what following Jesus was like? He does not promise a life without difficulties, but he promises to be with us always, helping us to calm life’s storms.
For further reflection
Discuss with Jesus the following points:
· Jesus does not promise an easy life, but he promises to be with us always. What do I do when life is hard?
· Do I trust that God can bring good out of suffering, evil and even death?
· Do I pray for the needs of the world, of those around me?
Prayer
Our Father in Heaven, your kingdom come, your will be done. Deliver us from evil. Amen.
