Jesus heals two blind men: Matthew 20:29-34
Imaginative Contemplation
Enter into the scene
One day I was sitting by the roadside with my good friend. We used to come there every day to beg because, being blind, we could not get a job, so we relied on the generosity of others. Some people were kind to us, but many despised us, judging that our blindness was a consequence of sin. We had heard about Jesus of Nazareth, how he had healed many people, and so we were excited when we heard that he was coming our way.
There seemed to be a crowd coming towards us. This is always a bit scary because people can bump into us. However, we decided to stay where we were and find out what this was all about. To our delight, we learnt that Jesus was in the middle of the crowd. We must not miss our chance of meeting Jesus, so we began to shout ‘Son of David! Have mercy on us!’ Of course we got the usual rebuffs, but then we heard Jesus calling us ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ he asked.
‘Please open our eyes!’ we pleaded. Then Jesus was standing next to us, touching our eyes, and after all these years, I was able to see again. We wanted to follow Jesus, and he encouraged us to join him on his way.
For further reflection
Discuss with Jesus the following points:
What do I want Jesus to do for me?
Do I judge other people without knowing their story?
In my life, where am I blind
o To my own faults and failings
o To other people’s needs?
· How can I follow Jesus along his way?
Prayer
Lord, help me to see your love in the world around me and your goodness in the people I meet. Teach me how to discern your will in my life. Amen.
