Jesus makes a leper clean; Matthew Ch 8:1-4
Imaginative Contemplation
Enter into the scene
I had been listening to Jesus on the hillside for such a long time. So much to think about, so many new ways of looking at things. My mind was whirling; I really needed to stop for a while.
Jesus led the crowd down the hill, to the real world. Theory is fine, but it needs to be put into action. And here was the perfect example…
Suddenly Jesus stopped in his tracks as a man rushed up to him, fell on his knees and pleaded with him. ‘Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean of my leprosy!’ There was a gasp from the people near Jesus and they pushed back into the crowd, fearing contamination. What would Jesus do, I wondered. Without hesitation, Jesus stretched out his hand and touch the unclean man. ‘Of course I want to.’ Jesus said. ‘Be clean!’ A gasp from the crowd, a shout from the man, and a big sigh and a huge smile from Jesus. ‘Don’t hang around here,’ Jesus said. ‘The Law prescribes that you go and be examined by the priests who will give you a clean bill of health.’ Running and skipping like a child, the man rushed off to meet the priests who confirmed that he was indeed freed from leprosy.
For further reflection
Discuss with Jesus the following points:
· When I have attended an inspiring lecture or read a powerful book, do I take action on what I have learnt?
· Am I open to recognise God’s call in the unexpected events of the day?
· Am I frightened by needy people, or am I able to relate to them with compassion?
Prayer
Lord, teach me to be generous, to give and not to count the cost, to labour and not to seek for rest. Help me to listen to your call to me each day. Amen.
