Jesus anointed at Bethany: Judas arranges to betray Jesus Matthew 26:6-16
Imaginative Contemplation
Enter into the scene
Simon must have been cured of his leprosy for him to be able to host a party in his house. Was he one of the lepers whom Jesus had healed?
Simon invited Jesus and his disciples to the meal. What was the dining room like? What was on the menu?
A woman came in carrying an alabaster jar. Had she been invited, or did she gate-crash?
The jar was filled with an expensive perfume. What sort of perfume was it?
The woman poured the ointment over the head of Jesus. It soaked his head and dripped down into his beard. How did Jesus react?
The disciples began to complain. ‘What a waste! This could have been sold and the money given to the poor.’ Who do you think might have said that?
How did the woman react to the criticism?
How did Jesus defend her?
This seems to have been the turning point for Judas. Why was he so upset about the perfume?
What do you think led Judas to betray Jesus?
How did the chief priests react?
For further reflection
Discuss with Jesus the following points:
Simon showed his gratitude to Jesus by inviting him to a meal. Do I try to remember and repay the kindness people offer me?
Am I quick to criticise or to affirm others?
How do I react to people’s criticism or affirmation?
The Examen reminds us to thank God for the gifts of the day.
How do I react when someone lets me down or betrays me? Am I ready to forgive?
Do I pray for sinners, those who are revealed on our nightly news sessions?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for the gifts of this day. Help me to use what I have wisely for the good of others. Keep me faithful to you. Remind me to pray for sinners, myself among them, Amen.
