Jesus calls four fishermen: Mark1:14-20

Imaginative Contemplation

After John the Baptist had been imprisoned, Jesus went to Galilee and preached the Good News from God. Jesus said, “The right time has come and the Kingdom of God is near! Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News.”

Walking along the shore, Jesus saw Simon and Andrew catching fish with a net. A little further along, James and John were getting their nets ready. Jesus offered them a different‘catch’, inviting them to follow him and influence people for the good. At once, they followed Jesus, and Zebedee was left in the fishing boat.

Enter into the scene

Were there many people following Jesus on this day?

The fishermen heard what he was saying. How did they feel?

What happened to them when they heard Jesus call them?

What would be the difference between ensnaring fish in a net and inviting people to follow in Jesus’ way?

How did Zebedee feel when his sons left him?

For further reflection

Discuss with Jesus the following points:

  • What is the Good News which Jesus came to preach?

  • Jesus called some disciples to follow him. Do I try to do everything myself, or am I ready to share God’s work with others?

  • What is the difference between ensnaring fish and offering

  • God’s invitation to other people?

Prayer

Lord, help me to hear your call each day and give me thestrength and courage to follow along your way. Amen.
