A Woman’s faith: Mark 7:24-30

Imaginative Contemplation

Jesus was travelling through foreign territory and was hoping to remain unrecognised. But a woman from the local area was desperate. Hearing that Jesus was there, she grasped at her last hope of recovery for her mentally ill child. How did Jesus feel when he was ‘discovered’? How did the woman heart of Jesus’ presence? What was the problem for the daughter?

The woman gate-crashed, falling on her knees before Jesus and begging for help. Imagine the woman’s distress.

Jesus responded with a proverb which sounded harsh. How did the woman respond to this?

When the woman challenged Jesus’ reply, Jesus was impressed by her courage and trust. He healed her daughter, which the woman confirmed when she returned home and found the child in her right mind.

Enter into the scene

I am so excited about what happened yesterday. I have been carrying a huge burden since my daughter became very unwell with a mental problem. Where could I get help? Who would listen to me without judging and dismissing me? People told me about Jesus. He seemed to be sent to us by God. Working miracles and accepting all manner of people, he seemed to be a friend to everyone. I wondered if he might listen to me? But then, I am a Gentile and he is a Jew. Can I dare to approach him? But then, can I let this opportunity pass? It might be my last chance.

It is amazing what one will do for one’s child. I was very tense and nervous as I approached the famous man. His disciples did not look too keen. But I kept pushing on. “Lord, help my daughter!’ I pleaded. He turned to me, he seemed thoughtful and reflective. As if he were thinking out loud, he said ‘It is not right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.’

‘You are talking about children? I’m talking about MY child – and she is in desperate need of your healing!’ Was this me speaking? How did I dare? How would Jesus react? I felt his attitude change. A huge smile lit up his face which I could hear in his voice as he promised that my daughter would be healed. I trembled with excitement as he said, ‘What wonderful faith you have!’ He gave me a big hug, and I could feel that his excitement was as great as mine.

And my daughter? Perfectly well again, the same beautiful child I have always known and loved.

For further reflection

Discuss with Jesus the following points:

  • Are there times when I want to be alone? Why is this?

  • How do I react when my schedule is interrupted?

  • Do I take the time to listen deeply to people?

  • Am I sometimes put off by people’s responses?

  • Am I ready to change my mind if given more information?

  • Do I trust God’s presence in my life?

Prayer

Lord, help me to recognise you in all things, in all places and in all people. Amen.
