Who is the greatest? Mark 9:33-37

Imaginative Contemplation

Jesus had just been talking with the crowd about strained family relationships. People were listening carefully, and did not want to be interrupted. But some people brought children to Jesus for him to bless them. The disciples tried to send them away. How do family relationships affect children?

When Jesus noticed this, he was angry. What made Jesus angry?

‘Let the children come to me, because the Kingdom of God belongs to them.’ Why is the Kingdom of God a special place for children?

What are the special traits of children which endear them so closely to Jesus?

Jesus went on; ‘Whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.’ In what manner does a child ‘enter the Kingdom’?

Enter into the scene

Sometimes memories from long ago surprise me. I can remember when I was about five years old. My parents had talked a lot about Jesus, and they always seemed so excited when they did. ‘Can I come and see Jesus, too?’ I begged. For a long time they said no, but as my birthday was just a few days away, they decided that this would be the best of presents for me.

We set out just after breakfast and followed the crowd as they walked along the road. There was a lot of talking, rather boring, I thought.

My parents tried to push their way through the crowd without much success. Then we saw other children skipping along, singing and calling out to Jesus. The crowd did not like our disturbance. What were we to do?

Jesus stopped, turned around and welcomed us. He wanted to know what we were singing. He seemed really interested. I felt excitement welling up inside of me.

I have never forgotten that day. At that moment I knew I was special to him. And I know that I still am!

For further reflection

Discuss with Jesus the following points:

  • How do I cope with interruptions in my daily life?

  • What is meant by ‘adult talk’? If children are not considered, how does that affect them?

  • What does it mean to be child-like?

Prayer

God our Father, my Father, thank you for having me as your child. Increase my faith and trust in your fatherly love and protection., Amen.
