CRA celebrates the appointment of Br Peter Carroll FMS as Superior General of the Marist Institute

Catholic Religious Australia (CRA), the representative body for the Leaders of religious congregations in Australia, celebrates the appointment of Br Peter Carroll FMS as the fifteenth Superior General of the Institute of the Marist Brothers, after a discernment process at the Institute’s XXIII General Chapter.

Br Peter has been a valued member of CRA’s National Council, on which he served for five years, three of which as its President. He was first appointed Provincial of the Marist Brothers’ Australian province in 2015, becoming the inaugural Provincial of the Star of the Sea Province in 2022, a province which encompasses eleven countries in the Pacific-Asia region.

Welcoming the good news, current CRA President, Br Gerard Brady CFC said, “We are delighted to hear of this appointment. Peter has made a significant contribution to religious life in Australia and is deeply committed to the charism of the Marist Brothers, particularly in their evangelisation and education of children and young people. We offer our prayerful support as he assumes this new leadership role.”

Anne Walker, National Executive Director of CRA, shared, “We have been blessed to have had Peter steer the CRA Council as its President, with pastoral leadership, vision, and a commitment to ensuring the expression of the prophetic voice of religious in the Church and in Australian society. We are so pleased that Peter’s many gifts, already shared with the Marist Star of the Sea Province and CRA, are being called forth further.”

Born in Bundaberg, Queensland, Peter joined the Marist Brothers in 1977, making his Final Profession in 1986. Peter holds degrees in Religious Education, and his early ministry was dedicated to Marist education, serving as a teacher and leader in Catholic secondary schools.

Peter’s capacity to engage with a full range of people through the many ministries of the Marist Brothers to share the Gospel message, and his enthusiasm in all he does, adds depth to this appointment as Superior General of the Marist Institute, a role which will require him to oversee the spiritual and missionary work of 2500 Marist Brothers, working in 79 countries on five continents.
