He honestly identifies the situation the Church faces, suggests we embrace the world in love not condemnation, recommends we are discerning, and proposes we use our God given capacities to imagine and then create the new. With God we are co-creators of the world and the Church – both of which will flourish with imagination, care and love.

But we can understand St Benedict only if we see life in a monastery as life in the real world. He does not offer us a recipe for leaving our world but a way of seeing and living in it.
