Event Description
Conflict and culture form a complex tangle at times. In the context of religious life - where communities also have a way of doing things, balancing cultures in a way that values the traits and perspectives of all involved is critical. Fortunately, the same critical skills that improve intercultural communication can help effectively resolve the conflict. Cathy Solano RSM and Patrick Fox will share their insights and experiences as we explore how to manage conflict - particularly those caused by cultural misunderstandings and miscommunication - and the impacts on living and ministering together.
Speakers
Patrick Fox is fascinated with cultures, languages, and observing people. He currently works as a Cultural Competency Trainer with Catholic Mission, where he has served for 17 years. Having lived and worked across six cultures over the years, he now has the privilege of advising and assisting others in navigating the challenges of Australia’s increasingly multicultural society.
Cathy Solano RSM is a Sister of Mercy from Melbourne who began her ministry as a secondary teacher and taught in regional and urban schools. She worked in Karachi as a teacher trainer, with Jesuit Refugee Service in Uganda, and more recently as education and pastoral coordinator for the diocese of El Obeid in Sudan. Cathy completed a Masters of Theology in Intercultural Studies from CTU, Chicago and is a spiritual director.
